Sometimes the problem isn’t your external environment, it’s the one inside your head.  If you suffer from anxious feelings or racing thoughts when you lay down to sleep, you may actually be experiencing sleep anxiety, which is a subset of performance anxiety.  To conquer it, try these fear-relieving techniques:

  • Spend the last couple of hours before you go to bed doing something relaxing.  Avoid exciting or scary activities, such as watching thrilling movies.

  • Practice meditation, prayer, or other conscious relaxation techniques before bed.

  • Try aromatherapy–lavender and chamomile are especially soothing.

  • Journal your thoughts. Sometimes getting them on paper helps stop a racing mind.
